brief_history

In 1979, National Fire Safety Council, Inc., became an independent nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to fire safety education, and in December of that year, NFSC was approved by the IRS and received a 501(c)(3) federal tax-exemption from the United States Treasury Department. Therefore, all contributions made to National Fire Safety Council, Inc., are federal tax deductible for income tax purposes as provided by the Internal Revenue Code.

The NFSC research team of creative educators develop fire safety materials for adults and children of all age levels. These include comprehensive 24-page graded manuals with a teacher’s guide, assorted folders, brochures, posters, wall charts, decals, stickers, and other types of materials as requested, with new materials being developed daily. The various topics covered by NFSC materials include: smoke alarms; home fire exit drills; arson; babysitting; heating safety; Stop, Drop, and Roll; friendly firefighters; holiday hazards; seat belt safety; bicycle safety; water safety; burn prevention; and more.

NFSC works with fire departments throughout the United States. The Council’s fire safety educational programs of materials and services are provided to communities exclusively through local fire departments. Nearly 150 pieces of informative materials and programs, created by an in-house staff of experienced educators, help millions of children and adults annually. Each department’s program cost is financially supported by local business leaders and the concerned citizens who recognize the need for action against loss by fire.

National Fire Safety Council, Inc. (NFSC) has fire and burn prevention and life safety programs across the United States.

Currently, NFSC has more than 20 fire safety coordinators throughout the United States assisting fire departments in reaching their citizens with the vital information that can help prevent the more than 500,000 home fires and 4,000 related deaths, which occur each year. It is the goal of NFSC to have one or more qualified fire safety coordinators dedicated to the cause of fire, burn, and life safety serving each state throughout our nation.

Fire safety counselors who reside in these states plan annual trips to specific fire departments to help them set up their programs for the upcoming year. Our coordinators are on the road for most of the year, spreading the word of fire safety and traveling with their friendly Dalmatian mascot, Firepup.®

Firepup® is welcomed with open arms in departments and schools nationwide. He has become a role model and spokesperson for fire safety worldwide.

The staff at NFSC has researched and created an extensive, well-rounded selection of fire safety educational materials and related services to be made available to children and their parents. NFSC makes its programs and materials available to schools through local fire departments nationwide. Fire departments are dedicated to helping educate school-aged children and the general public about fire and burn prevention and life safety.

NFSC is able to produce the most comprehensive fire safety educational materials in the world. Experienced educators, qualified writers, artists, printers, and other skilled craftsmen make up the staff at NFSC. Hundreds of various teaching materials are created and printed at our headquarters including: games, books, songs, stickers, and more.

Children of all ages and their parents are considered in our endeavor to teach preventive methods for safe living. We maintain a sizable reference library. Efforts have been made to compile and provide current and authoritative information that is educationally correct, age appropriate, and appealing to children.

NFSC’s philosophy of fire safety education is to use only positive teaching theories. No scare tactics or negative teaching theories are used. The educational materials that NFSC produces are researched, created, and developed by a qualified in-house full-time professional staff at National Fire Safety Council. Each piece of material is evaluated by the firefighters, teachers, and/or principals who implement the programs locally. The 150 materials cover a wide range of subjects through various teaching materials ranging from brochures and 24-page safety manuals to puppets, songs, and color sheets. Our techniques for presenting fire safety education are constantly being researched and updated.
